A Brief Discription of the Starlite Ramblers

From 1976 to 1984, “The Starlite Ramblers” outstanding instrumental and original vocal style set Colorado nightlife a stompin' and a twirlin' with a mixture of Western Swing, Big Band, and good time party songs. Nationally the Ramblers have performed from Arizona , Texas and Oklahoma to Idaho and beyond. They were a popular draw with opening acts for such notables as the Jerry Jeff Walker Band, John Denver, Ed Bruce, John Hartford, Merlin and Doc Watson, Asleep at the Wheel and Doug Kershaw.

The Ramblers front man and lead vocalist Michael Golden has been described as being the most versatile entertainer in country music with his tremendous mellifluous voice, dynamite musical abilities and his great fluency in performing no less than six instruments. Whether yodeling a nostalgic tune or performing his all time popular recitation of the “Auctioneer” Michaels' brilliant and inspirational stage performances helped to distinguish the Starlite Ramblers from other “standard fare” bands. Michael and his salient performances are well known for their outrageous and zany comedic antics, raw endless energy, quick wit and agile, entertaining, fancy foot work and dance. Some well known all time toe tapp'n, two stepping favorites of Rambler fans all around were hits written by Michael like “Friends of Mine”, “Colorado Rose”, Fiddlin Around” and “Her Cowboys Gone.”

If that wasn't enough to get you going, there were always stunningly amazing vocal harmonies, guitar solos, piano solos, and even bass guitar and drum solos! It was a cowboy's party time, dream come true! Party anthems like "Cowboy Songs and Beer, Friends of Mine,” the Rambler's rendition of the "Auctioneer" and "The Orange Blossom Special" with bits of Jerel's Steppenwolf and Michael's Jethro Tull thrown in it was sure to delight and entertain avid fans and newcomers alike. Getting Tired? Slow it down with bassist's Jerel Wood's milk and honey voice performing some of the most staggering versions of "Night Life”, “You Always Hurt The One You Love", and you've got serious motivation made for some serious buckle buffin'! Cowboy song's like the "Old Double Diamond" (Levi's signature Song), "Buckskin Lady" (written by Bob Frank), in the earlier years "Cool Water", "Tumbleweeds" and "San Antonio Rose" struck a cord with the more traditional fans. The Ramblers robust vocal harmonies and impeccable performances combined with covers of Big Band favorites such as "Clementine", "Roly Poly" and occasionally "Mack the Knife" set the whole place a twirlin'.

The group disbanded in 1983 after seven years of playing to standing room only crowds at clubs, concerts, and rodeos in many western states. Twenty years have come and gone but the Rambler's popularity has not. The idea to create a website originated when Levi and his son Shannon went to see a good friend of theirs, Singer, Songwriter Gary McMahan, they had plenty of time to talk with Gary before his show. Gary mentioned that he had been getting two to three hits a week on his website looking for Starlite Rambler albums and well, here we are! The decision to consider a reunion, create a website and to transfer the old albums onto CD for all our long time fans was born. We wanted everyone to enjoy “that great Colorado Cowboy music” once again and to allow our fans to “wax nostalgic” and bring back many wonderful memories. If you weren't able to be a part of a Rambler performance back in the day, ask anyone who was and you'll find out that a Starlite Rambler show was the place to be.
